$1,000 Total Rebates to Make Your Home More Energy Efficient Columbia Water and Light, a municipal utility, offers rebates to its residential customers who make certain energy efficient improvements to their homes. Under the Home Performance with Energy Star program, rebates are available for windows, doors, and building insulation while rebates for air duct sealing are based on performance tests. $850 for a New A/C and Heat Pump System Kansas City Power and Light (KCP&L) offers rebates to its residential customers to help offset the cost of replacing inefficient central AC and heat pump systems with newer, more efficient models. In order to qualify for a rebate, the system being replaced must have an EER of 8.0 or less, as tested by a CheckMe!-trained HVAC contractor. The replacement of "dead" systems will not be supported under this program because these systems cannot be tested. New systems must have a minimum SEER of 14 in order to receive the basic $650 rebate. Systems with a SEER of 16 or higher can receive a rebate of $850. Customers may qualify for basic maintenance services to help tune-up qualifying equipment, even if they do not purchase a new system. $2,000 Tax Deduction for Energy Audits & Improvements to Your Home The state of Missouri allows homeowners to deduct from their income taxes the cost of home energy audits and energy efficiency improvements based on recommendations made in such an audit. The tax deduction is valid for expenses of this nature incurred on or after January 1, 2009. The deduction has $1,000 limit per individual or joint taxpayer return and a $2,000 cumulative limit per individual or joint taxpayer. All deductions must be taken in the year in which the expenses were incurred. Audits must be performed by a home energy auditor certified by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR). $1,500/Appliance is Exempt from Sales Tax The state of Missouri is offering consumers a seven-day exemption from sales taxes on certain Energy Star certified new appliances up to $1,500 per appliance. The sales tax holiday will last from April 19 thru April 25 each year for the following appliances: clothes washers and dryers; water heaters; trash compactors; dishwashers; conventional ovens, ranges, and stoves; air conditioners; furnaces; and refrigerators and freezers. The exemption does not apply to retailers if less than 2% of their merchandise qualifies for the holiday, in which case the retailer must offer customers a sales tax refund in lieu of the sales tax holiday. Lots of Incentives for Energy Improvements in Your Area The Platte-Clay Electric Cooperative offers its members several different incentives that support energy efficiency improvements in buildings within its service area. Members that wish to install air- or ground-source heat pumps are eligible for a $300 installation rebate and a $0.01/kWh rate reduction for electricity purchases larger than 200 kWh between October and May of each year. Customers must have an electric water heater and a non-electric furnace in order to be eligible for this program. Customers may also receive a free (Freedom) or discounted (Marathon) replacement water heater by signing on to a $2.50/month, 3-year utility sponsored water heater servicing program.
